Different Flags by Eugenia Renskoff

Different Flags, a book by Eugenia Renskoff, tells the story of 26-year-old Ani. Ani leaves her comfortable but stifling life in San Francisco to travel to Argentina to comfort her widowed Aunt Esther. Once back in her native country, Ani must face her unexpected feelings of love for Padre Luis, her aunt's young and handsome parish priest. Different Flags is a study of Ani's inner conflict.

Bright!

December 25, 1986: So far, my Tia and I have had a good Navidad. Late yesterday afternoon, our old neighbors came to see us. Their presence meant more to us than the large pan dulce and bottles of sidra they brought us. It felt so good! Almost like being home again! And I did not mention Luis. I bit my lips really hard, but did not ask how he was, what he was doing. Nothing. A great feat.

Almost Navidad

December 21, 1986: In spite of all our efforts, we are still struggling, my Tia and I. I have not made much progress as a woman and she has her health to worry about. Things could be easier, but it is nice to be alive.

Again

December 7, 1986: I thought I saw him. A man very much like Luis walked passed me on the street. I wanted to call him, say something, but I didn´t dare. I don´t want to love him anymore.
