Different Flags by Eugenia Renskoff

Different Flags, a book by Eugenia Renskoff, tells the story of 26-year-old Ani. Ani leaves her comfortable but stifling life in San Francisco to travel to Argentina to comfort her widowed Aunt Esther. Once back in her native country, Ani must face her unexpected feelings of love for Padre Luis, her aunt's young and handsome parish priest. Different Flags is a study of Ani's inner conflict.

Friendship Day

July 20, 1986: Today, to celebrate Friendship Day, I am taking my Tia out. She is the only and the best friend I have. There´ll be no pain, no worries about money or health. Nothing distasteful, nothing sad or gloomy. I wish it could be like this always.

Edge

July 18, 1986: I feel like John Garfield in those late 30s, early 40s movies. He was always the outsider, the guy living living on the edge. His protagonists had a happy ending. I don´t think I will.

Guidance

July 12, 1986: No, not Luis. He might think that going to see him is just an excuse. He would be right.I still have feelings for him. That doesn´t change the fact that I have to know where I am going and why. A psychologist. I might try one of them out.

Worse

July 10, 1986: What to do? Being 28 isn´t easy. Not far from 30. There is nothing to show for it, nothing at all. My love for Luis, that´s what I would remember if I could have nothing else happen to me. Luis and my Tia. But there is no glory attached to feeling love and affection for them.
