Different Flags by Eugenia Renskoff

Different Flags, a book by Eugenia Renskoff, tells the story of 26-year-old Ani. Ani leaves her comfortable but stifling life in San Francisco to travel to Argentina to comfort her widowed Aunt Esther. Once back in her native country, Ani must face her unexpected feelings of love for Padre Luis, her aunt's young and handsome parish priest. Different Flags is a study of Ani's inner conflict.

Full

March 1, 1987: Near my 30th birthday. An important event. Makes me feel very old. I know that there are beautiful things about Argentina, but living in La Lucila, our new neighborhood, is not one of them. People are cold, indifferent, here. Quite unlike San Vicente.

While

February 1987: It has been such a long time since I've seen a smile on my Tia's face! I can't remember the last time she tried to pretend something was amusing. No, it's not her fault, and at her age, maybe I wouldn't find any reason to see humor in anything. But I feel it's time for us to enjoy life, such as it is.

San Vicente

January 17, 1987: I walked fast towards it, I ran to see it up close. And I touched our dear old door. But I wasn't the same Ani who had first come to San Vicente over 3 years ago. Everything was the same but it had changed because I had.

Our Pet

January 15, 1987: I feel that our dog is dying. It's not because he's getting old--10 is not too old--but he's losing energy and he doesn't want to eat anymore. It's funny, because my Tia has been listless and a simple thing like going to the corner almacen to get bread tires her out. There is nothing I can do about this. Nothing at all.
